The story
Two saxophones, no band. Derek Brown grabs the baritone, Jeff Coffin takes the tenor, and they make The Jackalope up on the spot. The whole thing is an improvisation, filmed for the Live from Layman series at Layman Drug Company, a Nashville studio built inside a two-story building from 1895 that spent about ninety years as a neighborhood pharmacy. Alex Chaloff directed, edited and mixed it.
Brown is the guy behind BEATBoX SAX, a style where he stomps and beats on his horn until a saxophone starts acting like a drum kit. Coffin spent years with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (three Grammys) and then joined Dave Matthews Band, first filling in for an injured LeRoi Moore and then staying on after Moore died. The two kept jamming, and in 2021 they put out a whole duo album, Symbiosis, mostly built out of jams like this one.
A jackalope is a rabbit with antlers. Something that shouldn't exist. Fitting name for a tune that didn't exist until the tape rolled.
