The story
Blockhead is James Simon, a New York hip-hop producer who builds instrumental records out of found sounds and odd scraps of other music. The Music Scene is the title track of his 2009 album on Ninja Tune, the same record that gave the world a song called Which One of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer?
Ninja Tune commissioned animator Anthony Francisco Schepperd for the video, and he directed and animated the whole thing alone, in Flash, in just under five months. He described it as a post-human New York where TV and animals rule, and that's about as tidy as the explanation gets. Drawings morph from one subject to the next with no warning, animals get scooped up and flung around, a monkey winds up and swings, a creature with a TV for a head slams its tentacles into the ground. It never holds still long enough to explain itself.
Cartoon Brew called it one of the finest animated music videos of the year and marveled at the sheer volume of drawing in it. Promonews called it a psychedelic epic. Five minutes of one guy's imagination with the brakes cut.
