The story
Cavanaugh is two rappers, Open Mike Eagle and Serengeti, longtime friends who met at Southern Illinois University. Their 2015 album Time and Materials follows Mike and Dave, two maintenance men at Cavanaugh, a made-up housing complex in a made-up Detroit, Florida, where rich tenants and subsidized tenants come in through separate doors. Open Mike Eagle produced the entire record, his first time doing that, and Spin ranked it among the 50 best hip-hop albums of 2015.
Wonder Girl is the shortest song on the album, barely a minute and a half, and the video doesn't overstay either. New York filmmaker Natalie Garcia-Mayor made it as a short piece inspired by the song, part home movie, part memory, part dream, chasing the joy of an intimate evening that's already slipping away. A San Diego Reader critic singled out the song's beautiful melancholy. That's the whole mood in two words.
