The story
The tenants of an apartment building start dancing crotch-first, and they don't stop until the building is in pieces. Ceilings, floors, furniture, all of it. That's the plot, and it's plenty.
The directing duo Daniels – Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – said they wanted to explore male sexuality in a really weird way. So they dreamed up a world where testosterone runs so hot that men prove it by breaking things with their genitals. Kwan plays one of the tenants, Sunita Mani co-stars, Prettybird produced, and the two Daniels did the visual effects with Zak Stoltz. Kwan has said they had no idea how people would react.
People reacted. The video won Best Direction at the 2014 MTV VMAs and Video of the Year at the UK Music Video Awards, picked up a Grammy nomination and passed a billion YouTube views in 2020. The song, DJ Snake's debut single with Lil Jon's voice on top, hit number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and went eight times platinum in the US. Then the Daniels went off and made Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won seven Oscars including Best Picture. Every career starts somewhere. Theirs started at the pelvis.
