The story
The Chemical Brothers stay out of this one entirely. Directors Dom & Nic (Dominic Hawley and Nic Goffey, the pair behind the duo's Setting Sun, Hey Boy Hey Girl and The Salmon Dance) sent a glitter-covered goblin into a London back alley instead.
He bursts out of a wheelie bin and starts dancing. Then he takes to the rooftops, crashes a theater to breakdance on stage, rides a police car back to the alley and dives into the bin just before a man dumps a bag of trash on top of him. English freerunner Daniel Ilabaca, co-founder of the World Freerunning and Parkour Federation, plays most of the goblin. The stage moves come from Lilou of France's Pockemon Crew, who won Red Bull BC One in 2005 and again in 2009. Supple Nam choreographed, and Framestore handled post-production, mixing computer graphics with the live dancing.
Midnight Madness was a shorter cut of Electronic Battle Weapon 10, released in August 2008 ahead of Brotherhood, the singles collection that topped the UK dance albums chart. The band also asked fans to film the odd things they get up to at midnight and pin them on Google Earth, and those clips became a second version of the video. Every town has a goblin. Most just stay in the bin.
