The story
Dennis Edwards is the man who replaced David Ruffin in The Temptations in 1968. He sang lead on Cloud Nine, Ball of Confusion and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, and went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group. Then, in 1984, he made a video that has been called possibly the worst music video ever.
It was shot in the basement at Motown Records. Siedah Garrett, his duet partner, has joked that the whole thing cost about twelve bucks (she has quoted two different prices over the years, both pocket change). Two great singers, no money and total commitment.
Garrett almost wasn't on it. The duet was meant for Chaka Khan, who couldn't make the session around Christmas, so Edwards kept the demo vocal Garrett had cut as a guide track and gave her a featured credit. The song went to number two on the R&B chart. Then the bassline, played by session man Nathan East, took on a life of its own: Eric B. & Rakim sampled it for Paid in Full in 1987, 2Pac used it on Hit 'Em Up, and TLC, the Notorious B.I.G. and a long line of others followed. A pocket-change video for one of the most borrowed grooves in hip-hop. Budget isn't destiny.
