The story
Earlier in 2012, Lady Gaga's camp asked Die Antwoord to open her Born This Way Ball tour. Ninja's public answer was basically no thanks. Then the South African rap-rave duo made this, a video they billed as a bright and colourful African adventure, and released it on October 16, 2012.
A male Gaga impersonator in the meat dress rides a minibus tour of Johannesburg with a guide played by comedian David Kibuuka. Hyenas dig through garbage, a street vendor has a pet black panther, and Die Antwoord perform on the sidewalk. The taxi gets hijacked, the fake Gaga ends up at a gynecologist (comedian Kagiso Lediga) who pulls out a Parktown prawn, a giant local cricket, in a scene based on an Anton Kannemeyer drawing. Then a lion eats him.
Gaga fired back on Twitter the next day and the band answered on Facebook. The bigger fight was over the band's black body paint and blackface in the performance scenes, which Slate and others called shock value built on an ugly history. Yolandi said she didn't know what blackface was. Shock was the point. Plenty of people decided it was the only point.
