The story

Niko Is was born Nikolai Paiva in Rio de Janeiro, moved to Florida at seven and came up in Orlando, where he started working with producer Thanks Joey back at Dr. Phillips High School and got known for freestyling. A 2012 mixtape called Chill Cosby (a title that deserves its own award) got people talking, and after the two recorded a song together in 2013, Talib Kweli invited him onto his label, Javotti Media.

Green Tomato Coupe arrived with his debut album Brutus in February 2015, Thanks Joey on the beat. Okayplayer premiered the video, directed by Chris Smith, and described it as a hazy, romantic day at Niko's beachside retreat set to a wavy, salsa-laced cool-out track. A Brazilian kid from Orlando, his high school beatmaker and a rap veteran's label. Hip-hop's family tree grows in strange directions.
