The story
Serengeti and Polyphonic are a Chicago duo, two Illinois natives who were already making solo records before they teamed up. Serengeti (David Cohn) raps. Polyphonic (Will Freyman) builds the beats. Their 2007 debut Don't Give Up caught the ear of Adam "doseone" Drucker at Anticon, the left-field rap label, and he signed them for album number two. Terradactyl came out June 23, 2009, with guest spots from doseone and Buck 65.
Call the Law is track eight. The Cleveland Scene heard it as a rap version of Dan Deacon, synthetic noise tangled up with natural sounds, and the duo's publicist pitched it as Serengeti gleefully skewering the stereotype of the black male rapper. Jasper Gray, Brian Wilkens and Ryan Philbrick of Futuristic Films directed the video. Critics split hard on the album – XLR8R shrugged, AllMusic gave it four and a half stars – which is about right for music this strange.
