The story
Heads up: this isn't an official Tame Impala video. A fan cut the song to a montage tribute to the best drug movies and uploaded it in 2015. For a band this psychedelic, the pairing makes a certain kind of sense.
The song is the real thing. Apocalypse Dreams was the first track anyone heard from Lonerism, premiered on Triple J and given away as a free download in July 2012. Kevin Parker made most of that album by himself in home studios in Perth and Paris, but he co-wrote this one with bandmate Jay Watson, the first Tame Impala song credited to anyone besides Parker. Dave Fridmann co-produced and mixed it. Pitchfork called it an expansive psych epic, and Lonerism went on to win the ARIA for Album of the Year and pick up a Grammy nomination.
How much Lars von Trier's Melancholia had to do with it depends on which interview you read. The song is about change and isolation. So, come to think of it, are most drug movies.
