The story
Two people in clown masks, wedged into a portable toilet, playing music that lurches from grindcore to jazz to electronica and back before you can find the flush handle. That's Clown Core. The duo has never said who they are. The usual guess is drummer Louis Cole of Knower and saxophonist Sam Gendel, who plays with Cole a lot, but nobody has owned up to it.
Hell comes from Toilet, the March 2018 album whose videos were all shot inside a porta-potty. Adult Swim's Smalls program aired them. Kerrang pegged them as a no-budget, avant-garde Slipknot, and Axl Rosenberg at MetalSucks called the project a masterpiece of modern art. In 2020 they moved up in the world, to a 1997 Toyota Previa minivan with a driver in a balaclava. Luxury.
A minute and a half of extreme music in a box built for something else entirely. Somewhere a jazz teacher is weeping. Somewhere else a plumber is taking notes.
