The story
Picture a volcano that erupts popcorn. Skydivers dropping into a giant bowl of pasta. A baby riding the wing of a plane. Dolphins swimming under an upside-down continent. That's roughly the first stretch of Up&Up, and it never slows down.
Israeli directors Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia built the whole thing like a scrapbook from a dream – stacking stock footage, real shots and visual effects into impossible pictures, with the Ukrainian effects house Gloria FX doing the heavy lifting and part of the shoot happening in Croatia's Biokovo mountains. They said they were inspired by collage artists past and present, and it shows: every frame is two or three ordinary things glued together until they become something nobody has seen before.
The song closes out A Head Full of Dreams, Coldplay's seventh album, and it's an anthem about refusing to give up. The video pulled nearly five million views in its first two days, Chris Martin called it one of the best videos ever made, and it won the directors an MTV Video Music Award in 2016. Hard to argue with a man standing next to a popcorn volcano.
