The story
Diane Coffee is not a woman named Diane. It's Shaun Fleming, a former Disney kid who voiced Jim and Tim Possible on Kim Possible and Max Goof in Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, then grew up to drum for the indie band Foxygen. Diane, he has said, is just the part of him that has always been a performer.
This one comes from his second album, Everybody's a Good Dog (Western Vinyl, 2015), and it was the first track he cut for it, almost by accident, in a loose session with Foxygen's live sound engineer. The studio version never matched that demo, so it's the only song on the record made differently from the rest. Fleming said it's about the Bro Code: you're falling for your buddy's ex and fighting with yourself over whether to cross that line. Love makes you do dumb things. Film at eleven.
Illustrator Danny Lacy, who made Crack-Duck for Adult Swim Canada, hand-drew the video frame by frame, old-school. Tristan Wheeler handled the VHS effects, and Lacy ran the finished cartoon through old analog videotape editors to get the kind of wear only tape can give you. Sunshine pop with fuzzy psych around the edges, dressed in a cartoon that looks like it was taped off TV a very long time ago.
