The story
It starts in a shabby roadside motel. Ladyhawke – New Zealand's Pip Brown – is packing a bag when the art on the wall comes to life. A cartoon version of her walks out, climbs into a Ford Thunderbird and hits a desert highway with a wink at Thelma & Louise. Then the landmarks get weird. Mount Rushmore has cat heads. During the bridge the car sails off a cliff, keeps flying and ends up cruising through outer space. And then we're back in the empty motel room like none of it happened.
The UK directing duo Frater, Benji Davies and Jim Field, built it around paintings by Sarah Larnach, Pip's close friend and former roommate, who painted nearly every background. The images of Ladyhawke and the car were layered in with rotoscoping, so the whole thing plays like a watercolor road trip. Larnach also painted the album and single covers, and years later earned a Grammy nomination for her packaging art on Passenger's Whispers.
My Delirium was the biggest single off her 2008 debut album, top ten in New Zealand and Australia, and it won Single of the Year at the 2009 New Zealand Music Awards. A synth-pop road movie painted by your old roommate. Friends like that are hard to find.
