The story
Before Mike Patton, Faith No More had Chuck Mosley, and this was the song that put them on the map. Keyboardist Roddy Bottum wrote the title, the chant and most of the original verses after listening to a lot of Run-DMC, and he described the sound as Kraftwerk meets Black Sabbath. Mosley added his own lines and delivered the whole thing in a blunt, almost emotionless deadpan, which is the joke.
It's a sarcastic swipe at the 1980s charity-concert craze – Live Aid, Feed the World, pop stars posing for famine relief. The band first cut it in 1985 for their debut album, then re-recorded it for Introduce Yourself in 1987 with the references updated to stay current. They've kept rewriting it over the years, which is fitting for a song about the news cycle.
The video was their first, directed by Slash Records founder Bob Biggs with Jay Brown. Bright colors, a nod to the rap videos of the day, a bouncing baby, a flying dog and a cross-dressing cameo. It got moderate play on MTV and kicked off the band's long love affair with surreal imagery. The single reached number 53 in the UK in 1988. This upload is a 4K remaster from UPROXX Indie Mixtape.
