Guided By Voices – If We Wait

The story

No label made this one. A fan named Sara Shisbe posted the song to YouTube in 2014, typed out the words, and signed it with a dedication in Spanish to someone named Siti. Somebody made a mixtape for a friend and the rest of us got to keep it.

The song is pure Guided by Voices. Robert Pollard's band out of Dayton, Ohio made a religion out of cheap four-track recording and never-ending output (more than 40 albums and counting). If We Wait first showed up on small-press split singles in 1993, then landed on Sunfish Holy Breakfast, a 1996 Matador EP of ten songs in under 23 minutes, built from outtakes of the Under the Bushes Under the Stars sessions. One writer called it Beatles-on-a-budget, which is a fair description of the whole band and about the nicest thing you can say about a three-minute song.
