The story
Gystere is Adrien Peskine, a Paris singer, multi-instrumentalist and video maker who pitches his sound as R&B fusion and progressive rock with Afro-Brazilian accents. His debut album, A Little Story, came out in 2020 as a concept record built like a film soundtrack and aimed squarely at racism and sexism. In 2022 he expanded it with Another Story, a nine-track suite, and brought in esperanza spalding to sing on several tracks. On this one she co-wrote the words and the vocal arrangements.
The video is a homemade sci-fi epic. Gystere and Anthony Peskine directed it and did nearly every other job too: camera, lights, models, sets, sound effects, stop motion and animation. Spalding pitched in on costumes, hair, makeup, wind and stunts, and plays Jazz Police #2. The credits also list a clay car and a clay moon, a trainer for the plastic animals, a melting ice-cream villain figurine and an Affreux Béké Intergalactique. Gystere's earlier clips ran on the same fuel: intergalactic chases, a half-man, half-dolphin spaceship commander and demonic cops.
A jazz star doing her own stunts in a tabletop space opera. Read the credits to the end. They're half the fun.
