The story

Johnny Blue Skies is Sturgill Simpson, and with a band called the Dark Clouds he made Mutiny After Midnight, a late-'70s style disco record cut live at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville with no drum machines in sight. He told fans it was disco-hedonism and a protest record at the same time. It came out in March 2026 on vinyl, cassette and CD only. No streaming. A leak had already hit YouTube two weeks early anyway.

So this video was the album's first legit digital release, and it's a meme bin. It opens on an old TV playing a clip from WKRP in Cincinnati, with Dr. Johnny Fever hyping the next record. The needle drops, and then it's every dancing clip the internet ever loved: a He-Man meme, a cybergoth rave, Napoleon Dynamite's big routine, the Pulp Fiction dance, Austin Powers, Spider-Man strutting down the street. Tyler Childers shows up and breaks it down too, which might be the best part.

The song is a sex song that skips the innuendo, and its sped-up ending is one of the album's more fun moments. The record went to number three on the Billboard 200. Not bad for a country outlaw with a disco ball and no Spotify link.
