The story
Marcus King grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, the son of blues guitarist Marvin King, and was playing shows with his dad at eight. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys says he is regularly the best player in the room. The Well was the first taste of King's solo debut El Dorado, which Auerbach produced at his Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville with veteran session players like Bobby Wood, Gene Chrisman and Dave Roe. King wrote it with Auerbach and Ronnie Bowman, and said it stands for the source of all his influences.
It's a short, stomping blues-rock testimony about a churchgoing upbringing and the music that set him loose. Director Reid Long, who has shot videos for Eric Church and The Black Keys, stages it as a tent revival. A sign outside promises a miracle, and inside King preaches through his guitar until the congregation is converted. King said he wanted it to capture a gospel revival – a room full of people feeling something big together. El Dorado later picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.
