The story
Masego calls his sound TrapHouse Jazz. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, raised mostly in Virginia, he's a saxophonist, singer and rapper who taught himself drums as a kid and never picked just one lane. Mystery Lady first came out in November 2020 with Don Toliver as a single from his Studying Abroad EP, a record he said borrowed from trips to Japan, South Africa, Nigeria, Amsterdam and Stockholm.
For the deluxe edition, Studying Abroad: Extended Stay, he rebuilt the song as Sego's Remix with instruments native to Mexico. Then he went to Mexico City to shoot it with Brazilian director Douglas Bernardt, who had already won a Cannes Lions Grand Prix for his short film Bluesman. Masego wanders through courtyards and alleys singing, and women step out of doorways into the sun to show off their Latin dance moves. Bernardt said every location and casting choice was meant to show the city with its true character. The clothes came from Carla Fernandez.
Masego has called music his passport. This one came back stamped. Extended Stay picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album, and Mystery Lady passed 100 million combined streams.
