The story
One camera, one take, one shirtless actor. That's the whole recipe. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed this homemade video starring her husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass, Nocturnal Animals, Tenet), who dances alone for four straight minutes under a string of fairy lights, sporting a handlebar mustache and long curly hair straight out of the eighties. The camera sits low and barely moves, and a higher frame rate stretches every move. Mike Milosh, the man behind Rhye, shot it himself as director of photography.
Rhye is Milosh, a Toronto-born singer and classically trained cellist who first studied the instrument under his father. His dad believed a single note should be enough to move you, and that music means nothing if the listener doesn't feel it. Milosh called Black Rain an eighties version of disco, the way Quincy Jones heard disco. It's a slow, sensual love song about not rushing, and it came out in October 2020 as the lead single from Home, which followed in January 2021.
A married couple, a singer holding the camera and four minutes of nerve. Sometimes that's the whole budget.
