The story
In 1994 the Rolling Stones got very, very big. Literally. David Fincher shot them as black-and-white giants strolling through New York City, with equally giant models around them, while ordinary couples down on the streets are wrapped up in each other. Mick even blows his famous shirt-fanning stage move up to skyscraper scale.
Fincher made it between Alien 3 and Seven, when he was already better known for music videos than movies. Digital Domain handled the effects, with Fred Raimondi supervising the compositing that dropped the giants into the city, and part of it was shot in Toronto. Robert Duffy at Spot Welders edited it.
Love Is Strong was the first single from Voodoo Lounge, the band's first release on Virgin and their first single without Bill Wyman, with Darryl Jones on bass. Jagger's harmonica went on late and changed the whole feel. In the US the single stalled at number 91 on the Hot 100, their lowest-charting lead single, though it hit number two in Canada. The video did better: a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video and an MTV award for its special effects. The song stalled. The giants walked off with the hardware.
