“Far out! A cross between Massive Attack and Joe Walsh!”
The story
Mike Scott has been running The Waterboys since 1983, and he is the only member who never left. Nearly forty years in, he is still chasing the big mystical thing – the same itch that gave us The Whole of the Moon. The Golden Work is a short, strange track from Good Luck, Seeker, the band's 14th album, credited to Scott, Aongus Ralston and Charles Wiliams. The vocals come through distorted, which gives the whole thing a weirdly futuristic feel.
The video is about as homemade as it gets. Scott filmed a car drive through Japan himself, travelogue style, and Anana Kaye of Duende Visions chopped and mashed the footage into something abstract. A road trip run through a blender.
It was one of a pile of clips the band put out around the album in 2020 – Freak Street, Dennis Hopper, The Soul Singer and more. Most bands make one video per album. Scott made a photo album.
