The story
The Waterboys have always been Mike Scott plus whoever's in the room, and on Good Luck, Seeker he reached for a Kate Bush deep cut. Why Should I Love You? first came out on her 1993 album The Red Shoes, after Bush mailed Prince a demo and he sent back a heavily reworked version, with some of his keyboards, guitar, bass and vocals staying on the final track. Scott roughed it up into a rockier Waterboys song.
The video is a love letter in the most literal sense. Dutch filmmaker Robert Jan Westdijk built it from photos Scott took of his wife, Megumi Igarashi, while they were courting in Japan. It was a gift. Lockdown had split the couple up, and Westdijk made it knowing they were apart. Scott said they were getting through a socially distanced marriage fine, but they missed each other.
The album came out in August 2020 and went to number 14 in the UK. The video followed in October: a scrapbook of falling in love, released in the year everybody was stuck apart. Nice gift.
