The story
Not a music video. This is the scene from From Dusk Till Dawn that everybody remembers. Robert Rodriguez directed, Quentin Tarantino wrote it, and inside a nightclub called the Titty Twister, Salma Hayek steps out as Santanico Pandemonium, a vampire stripper, with a Burmese python draped across her shoulders, and dances. Tarantino, who also acts in the film, ends up drinking tequila off her toes.
Hayek has a lifelong phobia of snakes. The python wasn't in the script, and Tarantino told her about it on the day of the shoot. She only took the part after he claimed Madonna was interested. She has said she got through it by putting herself into a trance, and that she barely remembers filming. There was no choreography either. She made the whole dance up on the spot.
The band on the bandstand is Tito & Tarantula, playing the bar's house band: Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff and Johnny Vatos Hernandez. Larriva came up in the first wave of Los Angeles Latino punk and had already turned up in Rodriguez's Desperado. After Dark went on the film's soundtrack, opened the band's 1997 debut Tarantism, and later came back in Spanish as the theme for From Dusk till Dawn: The Series. One snake, one terrified actress, zero rehearsal. Movie history.
