The story
Ugly Casanova is Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse in a fake mustache, more or less. The official story was that a drifter named Edgar Graham handed the band his songs backstage in Denver and vanished. Brock later admitted Edgar was a fiction he made up so he could step away from Modest Mouse and skip the interviews. The songs became Sharpen Your Teeth, recorded in Oregon in 2001 and released by Sub Pop in 2002.
The video sat on a shelf for four years. SPIN premiered it in June 2006, calling it the lost Ugly Casanova video, and Sub Pop tucked it onto its Acquired Taste DVD. It stars a little kid in bright primary colors trying on grown-up jobs – scrubs, lab coats, a fast-food chef getup – while poking at bugs and digging through Play-Doh poop. A song about forgetting, paired with all the gross, wonderful stuff we did as kids and can't quite recall.
