  1. 2.“Back when we were recording 'Welcome to Mali,' Damon Albarn came to visit us in Bamako. This started a new creative process for us, as we were used to composing each on our own. With 'Sabali,' we all came together. We have wonderful memories of this collaboration.”

The story

Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia met in 1976 at Mali's Institute for Young Blind People, where both played in the Éclipse Orchestra. Amadou was born with cataracts and was blind by his mid-teens. Mariam lost her sight at five to untreated measles. They married in 1980 and spent the next four decades mixing blues and rock with traditional African rhythms, from Bamako to Paris to Glastonbury.

Sabali is the odd one in their catalog. Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz produced it and co-wrote it, and it's keyboards all the way down. NPR's reviewer called it cheesy French electropop and meant it as a compliment. Sabali is a Bambara word for patience. The song opened their 2008 album Welcome to Mali, which earned a Grammy nomination, Pitchfork put it among the top tracks of 2008, and it became the most-played French single worldwide in 2009.

The song kept finding new life. DJ Snake reworked it as Patience in 2025, with a video shot outside Dakar featuring Omar Sy and the duo themselves, and it won Best Narrative at the Berlin Music Video Awards. Amadou died in Bamako that April, weeks before it came out. Patience, it turns out, pays.
