The story
Andrew Tuttle plays the banjo, but forget the front porch. The Australian runs his five-string through reverb, decay and processed electronics until it drifts like weather. On New Breakfast Habit he's joined by Luke Schneider on pedal steel, which makes the whole thing feel weightless, and Darren Cross on acoustic guitar. It's early-morning music. Coffee, not whiskey.
It comes from Fleeting Adventure, his fifth album and his most collaborative one. Tuttle started recording in September 2020 and met a lot of his guests online, then gave them a wide-open brief and let them play.
The video comes from M.C. Schmidt, half of the Baltimore experimental duo Matmos (the guys who once made an album out of surgery recordings). He puts a rising sun under everything and layers images on top: a kid running and leaping, birds gliding across the sky, all of it soaked in orange.
