The story
If you grew up in the eighties, you may have heard Britta Phillips sing without knowing it. She was the singing voice of the title character in the cartoon Jem, which ran from 1985 to 1988. After that came bands: The Belltower, Ultrababyfat, then Luna, plus the duo Dean & Britta with her husband and Luna bandmate Dean Wareham.
Luck or Magic, out in 2016 on Double Feature, was her first solo album after decades in bands. She started it with DJ Scott Hardkiss, who died in 2013, and finished it with producer Eric Broucek. This first single is a cover of a 1969 Evie Sands song. The video is about as homemade as it gets: Dean filmed Britta on an iPhone in their backyard, and Mike Spano, a Philadelphia friend she met at a Luna show, turned the footage into something she called beautiful and trippy. He even sent her a sped-up version of the song to sing along to so he could slow the picture down, until she found it too hard and he met her closer to the real tempo. A husband, a phone and a backyard. Sometimes that's the whole budget.
