The story
Melody Prochet grew up in Puyricard in the south of France, learning piano and viola as a kid, and she says the viola is why her songs come out sounding orchestral. By 2012 she was recording as Melody's Echo Chamber, and her self-titled debut was produced by Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, her partner at the time. They made it in Perth, Australia, and at her grandparents' beach house on the French coast.
I Follow You came out that September as the album's second single. Director Laurie Lassalle took the video underwater and drenched it in trippy color, with Jean Thévenin on effects and compositing. One reviewer called it bokeh-addled and aquatic, which nails it: soft focus, light bending through water, everything drifting just out of reach.
The song is sixties-flavored pop run through a fuzz pedal, and critics heard Tame Impala all over it. That comparison followed her for years. Prochet later said the press handed the credit to Parker and overlooked her own work. Watch this one again and it's pretty clear whose dream it is.
