- 2.“This song was playing when I went to JCPenney, and I had to Shazam it.”
- 3.“I was shopping at Marshalls. They were playing obnoxious, frantic songs over the store speakers that had everyone on edge. Then this song came on, and the whole store chilled out and started to quiet down... So thank you, Marshalls, for scoring me a cute outfit and a new song.”
The story
Niki & The Dove are Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf from Stockholm, and Play It On My Radio was their comeback in October 2015 – the first taste of the follow-up to their 2012 debut, Instinct. It landed on their second album, Everybody's Heart Is Broken Now, in April 2016. The press heard '80s pop smoothness all over it. VICE said it sounded like a sunset and compared it to a lost song from the Cocktail soundtrack, with just the right amount of Toto. That's a compliment. Mostly.
The video comes from Argentine animation artist Gustavo Torres, better known online as Kidmograph, along with Clara Luzian of Render Fruit. Kidmograph made his name on looping, retro-futuristic sci-fi GIFs that look like the cyberspace everybody imagined in the late '80s. VICE called the video exceedingly retro, soaked in every warm shade of blush, red, orange and yellow, and filed it under pure feel-fine vibes. Beach-bar synth-pop with a neon tan.
