- 3.“I worked on this intimate video – it was only the director, Channy and me, a skeleton crew. Must have heard 'Lay Your Cards Out' 50 times in a row! Justin Vernon from Bon Iver popped by the studio that shoot, as I recall.”
The story
POLIÇA came together in Minneapolis in 2011, out of Ryan Olson's sprawling collective Gayngs, where Channy Leaneagh sang backup. Coming off a rough breakup, she needed an outlet, and Olson talked her into making R&B-flavored songs with him. Lay Your Cards Out, with Mike Noyce of Bon Iver on vocals, was one of the first two tracks they ever put out. The live band that grew from it runs on bass and two drummers, and Justin Vernon told Rolling Stone they were the best band he'd ever heard.
The video was a three-way job: Chris Hadland directed and shot it, JoLynn Garnes directed and edited, and Hannah Fidell, who went on to make the film A Teacher, co-directed. Jay-Z premiered it on his Life+Times site, and Minnesota's The Current called it simple and beautiful. Simple fits. The song is slinky robo-R&B, and the debut album it opened, Give You the Ghost, came out on Valentine's Day 2012. Of course it did.
