The story
Richard Hawley is Sheffield through and through. He played guitar in Longpigs, toured with his pal Jarvis Cocker's band Pulp, and names his albums after corners of his hometown. Hollow Meadows, his eighth, is named for a hamlet on the city's edge. He wrote much of it while laid up with a broken leg and a slipped disc, and you can hear it: the voice is more weary and ragged than on his earlier records, and the songs circle getting older, getting things wrong, and love.
I Still Want You opens the album. He and his longtime guitarist Shez Sheridan demoed it early in Hawley's shed studio, which he calls Disgracelands, and the demo vocal was good enough to keep. It came out as the album's second single on 6 October 2015, the same day as this video.
Anaïs Wrench Roumens directed it, with Paul Green producing, and it plays as romantic as the song: a love letter from a man who isn't pretending to be young anymore. Hollow Meadows went top ten in the UK. Not bad for a record written with a broken leg.
