The story
The Echo Friendly is two people who used to be a couple and kept making music anyway. Jake Rabinbach and Shannon Esper went to the same elementary and junior high school without ever really being friends. Then a small indie film called Open Five threw them together in the summer of 2009. Romance. Breakup. Band. They call themselves part Brooklyn, part Memphis, and Memphis is where they made their record.
Same Mistakes is the song that got them noticed. It came out as a single on Cantora Records in June 2011, and Lena Dunham sent it to the music team on HBO's Girls, who were thrilled and put it over the end credits of season one's fourth episode, Hannah's Diary. The two of them trade vocals on a hazy, after-midnight confession about sliding back into the same bad loop with the same person.
Paul Korzan directed this video in 2012, with the song billed as the lead track from their coming LP, Love Panic (it finally landed in 2014). An ex-couple singing a duet about not learning their lesson. You can't cast that any better.
