The story
Tove Lo wrote Habits while Hurricane Sandy pounded New York, holed up in a friend's studio in Midtown Manhattan after a breakup. The song is her trying to forget an ex by any means available – drinking, drugs, bad nights out – and she has said the drug part was true to her life. She put it out herself in March 2013, and by December a major label had it back out as Habits (Stay High).
This is the second video, from March 2014, made by the Swedish directors Motellet Film. They shot it over three days in a Swedish club with her friends, and Tove wore a heavy camera rig for the shoot. You follow her from waking up after one party to getting ready for the next, drinking, kissing friends, crying alone in a bathroom stall and collapsing into bed at home. She wanted the video to feel as messy as the song. It won Best Alternative/Rock Video at the VEVO Hot This Year Awards.
The song climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest a Swedish act had gone there since Ace of Base's The Sign in 1994, and went eight times platinum. The Hippie Sabotage remix reused this same footage in slow motion and passed a billion YouTube views. A sad song about partying too hard, played at every party. Of course.
