The story
It opens in a classroom where the kids are wearing Merrill Garbus's trademark face paint and feathers. Then it cuts to a room full of painted adults dancing, and Garbus joins them for the second half. Director Mimi Cave comes from dance and choreography, and you can tell: orderly marches give way to chaotic tumbling, but the stripes of body paint and color bars still line up as the dancers roll over each other. It closes on a routine done with nothing but faces.
Bizness was the first single from w h o k i l l, the second tUnE-yArDs album, released on 4AD in April 2011. Garbus, a former puppeteer from Vermont who builds songs out of loop pedals, ukulele and her own voice, co-wrote it with bassist Nate Brenner. The record topped the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll for 2011, which made it probably the lowest-selling winner in the poll's history. Critics loved it. Everybody else caught up eventually.
