The story
Somewhere in Eastern Europe sits Molvanîa, a tiny republic with bad teeth and one synth-pop superstar. None of it is real. Molvanîa was invented for a satirical travel guide, Molvanîa: A Land Untouched by Modern Dentistry, written by Australian comedians Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner and Rob Sitch, the crew behind The D-Generation and Working Dog.
Cilauro plays Zladko Vladcik, better known as Zlad!, Molvanîa's biggest pop export. Elektronik Supersonik (you'll also see it spelled Electronic Supersonic) is his mock Eurovision entry from 2004, with Mary Coustas – Effie from Acropolis Now – co-starring. The joke's own press material calls the song a fusion of hot disco rhythms and cold war rhetoric, and claims Zlad won Molvanian Idol before getting bounced from Eurovision after a run-in with Turkish customs.
The clip escaped the book tour and went viral. Synthtopia nominated it for worst synth-pop video ever, then admitted the keytar goddess might redeem it. A sequel followed in 2006, I Am the Anti-Pope. This copy landed on YouTube in 2007 from a random channel with a party-pill ad stapled to the description, which is the most Molvanian thing about it.
