The story
A man shows up at a mental hospital looking for someone who claims to have the latest thing in pop music. What he finds is a lab where a scientist is moving musicians' brains into monkeys. The monkeys wear the faces of Basement Jaxx's Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, play the song, then trash the gear. And our visitor is next on the table.
Scandinavian directing crew Traktor shot it over three days in a real mental hospital in Prague, with Damian Samuels as the doomed record man. The monkeys were reportedly aggressive. Songfacts reads it as a jab at the smugness of the dance music business, and the track itself is built from two Gary Numan songs.
It was the third single from Rooty, hit number 9 in the UK in late 2001, and won a best video award at the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival over clips from Oasis, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams. Mixmag called it the best dance music video ever made, and Pitchfork put it at 24 on its list of the best videos of the 2000s.
