The story
Boxcutter is Barry Lynn, an Irish-born producer who made his name on Planet Mu and Hotflush with skittery bass music. TV Troubles, from his fourth album The Dissolve (Planet Mu, spring 2011), swerves somewhere else entirely: 1980s LA funk, with a guitar that keeps slipping into a wormhole and coming back a little stranger. The Fader counted about 30 seconds of warm-up before the track gets going. The whole thing is barely two minutes.
The video comes from Sabrina Ratté, a Montreal artist who describes video as painting with electronic light. She works with analog gear like video synthesizers and feedback loops, machines that react in real time to a turn of the knob. TV Troubles was a bright experiment in video feedback: psychedelic VHS footage, pastel puddles of color and a funhouse-mirror figure gazing up at the stars. Ratté has since taken this kind of work into galleries, splitting her time between Paris and Montreal.
A funk track that sounds like a warped cassette, matched to pictures that look like a warped cassette. Adjust your tracking and hang on.
