The story
The year is 2100. The planet is packed, and the fix is a social network called Anvil that you join by dying. That's the setup here, and it's darker than anything your phone has pitched you so far.
Lorn is Marcos Ortega, an American electronic producer from Illinois whose heavy, industrial-leaning music has turned up in films, TV shows and video games. Anvil comes from his album Vessel on Wednesday Sound. He handed it to GERIKO, the Franco-Belgian duo of Hélène Jeudy and Antoine Caëcke, and gave them full creative freedom. They wrote, designed and animated it themselves, mixing digital 2D, 3D and traditional animation, with Anthony Lejeune and Manddy Wyckens on character animation.
It's all black and white, told without a word of dialogue through the eyes of a young woman in her final moments: drones over a city with a dead broadcast signal, hovercraft, looming buildings, endless corridors. The duo pointed to Akira, Ghost in the Shell and the Belgian comics of Schuiten and Peeters, and said the story grew out of their own talks about how plugged-in everyday life has become. It was an official selection at SXSW and the Berlin Music Video Awards in 2017. Somewhere a growth team is taking notes.
