The story
Robert Tilton was one of the biggest televangelists in America. At its 1991 peak his show Success-N-Life aired in all 235 US TV markets and his ministry was pulling in nearly $80 million a year, much of it from viewers urged to make financial vows, $1,000 preferred. Then ABC's Primetime Live reported that the ministry was throwing away prayer requests and keeping the money that came with them. Tilton denied it on the air. In 1992 he admitted to Texas investigators that prayer requests were routinely discarded after sorting, and Success-N-Life's last national episode aired in 1993. He was no stranger to remixes, either: a Seattle station, KTZZ, had dubbed fart sounds over his preaching back in 1985.
In August 2015 John Oliver gave him a Last Week Tonight segment, after a seven-month pen-pal relationship that started with a $20 donation and got Oliver a $1 bill in the mail with a request to send it back with more. Less than two months later Pogo, the Perth producer who builds songs out of film and TV clips, released Hoo Ba Ba Kanda, a dance track made from Tilton's tongue-speaking and pulpit moments. Joe.My.God guessed Oliver's segment lit the fuse. Sermon in, groove out. The collection plate stays empty.
