The story
Shpongle is producer Simon Posford on synths, guitars and programming, plus Raja Ram on flute and vocals. Their debut, Are You Shpongled?, came out in January 1998 on Twisted Kinetic, sold more than 30,000 copies, and gets filed under world music and psybient. Divine Moments of Truth runs past ten minutes, opens with throat singing lifted from a Spectrasonics sample CD, and is the duo's tribute to the psychedelic drug DMT. A lot of people first heard it in the old Flash animation Flashback.
There's no official video. This is a fan upload by the YouTube channel steelyman08, who set the whole track to Electric Sheep visuals. Electric Sheep is a screensaver that software artist Scott Draves launched in 1999. Idle computers around the world render fractal flame animations, viewers vote for the ones they like, and the winners mate and mutate into new ones. The name is a nod to Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Your computer naps, and this is what it dreams.
The project has been shown at MoMA and LACMA. Here it's ten minutes of crowd-bred computer art riding a song about DMT. Are you Shpongled? You will be.
