The story
Summit closes out Skrillex's Bangarang EP, the late-2011 release that won him Grammys for Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Dance Recording. It's the soft side of the record, a six-minute chillstep-tinged closer with Ellie Goulding's airy vocals floating over Skrillex's chopped-up sound. The two started dating after working on it and split in late 2012.
The video landed at the start of January 2013, and neither singer is really in it, apart from a brief Skrillex cameo. It's made by Pilerats, an Australian design collective, and it plays like a dusk-to-dawn night out with a gang of young friends in Perth: skateboard tricks, lipstick, smoke rings, leaps into pools from moving vehicles, somebody's hair set on fire. There's some partial nudity too. The intro cuts the images in time with individual notes, a trick it comes back to later.
Skrillex posted it with a shout-out to his friends in Perth for surprising him with it, though Songfacts reports he hired Pilerats after seeing an earlier video of theirs, and that the job took seven months. Either way, it's a home movie of the kind of night most people only half remember.
