The story
The Avalanches are Australians Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, the sample wizards behind Since I Left You. The Divine Chord came out with their third album, We Will Always Love You, in December 2020, almost twenty years to the day after that debut. It has MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden singing, Johnny Marr of the Smiths on guitar, a choir, and a chopped-up piece of an old Shirelles song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. VanWyngarden was coming off a breakup when he joined the session in LA, and Chater says you can hear the loss. Marr they cornered backstage at Fuji Rock. Chater's reaction: this is Johnny Marr, this is my whole teenage life.
Jonathan Zawada and Michael Dole directed the video. Like most of the album, it's tuned to space and planets, and it follows a small child camping and wandering through a forest. A kid alone in the woods, looking up. Pretty much how the record sounds.
