The story
Michel Gondry had already made Let Forever Be, Star Guitar and Go for the Chemical Brothers, so this time he brought his brother Olivier along. The setup is simple. Twelve dancers, a darkened studio, the music turned up. It opens looking like a lost episode of Soul Train against a plain black backdrop.
Then it gets weird, slowly. Olivier handled the post-production and effects, and they creep in from the edges of the frame until they're the whole show. Dancers in oversized white outfits get linked together and move as one body, forming shapes that keep shifting. Creative Review called it a '70s-style dance party that gets stranger as it goes. That's the Gondry move: start normal, then pull the rug out one thread at a time.
The song is a liquid disco number built on an interpolation of Peter Brown's Dance with Me, released early in 2019 as a single from the duo's album No Geography. It won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Recording and served as the theme for the BBC's Glastonbury 2019 coverage. Disco never died. It just went to art school.
