The story
Alex Paterson started The Orb in 1988 with Jimmy Cauty, spinning records in the chill-out room at London's Heaven club, and the pair helped invent ambient house. More than thirty years and a long parade of collaborators later, Daze opens the album Abolition of the Royal Familia, out on Cooking Vinyl in March 2020. This Missing & Messed Up Mix came out as a single about six weeks ahead of it. It's funky and playful: Andy Cain's soulful vocal floating over a washed-out haze and a rubbery bass groove.
The video stars Ruby, Paterson's dog. She gets into some Orb-branded honey and blasts off on a psychedelic trip through the cosmos. That's the plot. It's plenty. The Orb have always sounded like the soundtrack to somebody else's trip, and this time the somebody has four legs.
The album is a pile-up of old friends – Youth, Roger Eno, Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, Gaudi, David Harrow. A Prince Charles sample had to come off it for legal reasons. With a title like that, you can see why.
