1.“For a time, this song was everywhere. Then it was nowhere. For years, its existence was forgotten. Then last year I heard it playing in a petrol station... and it was like part of my brain was being unlocked.”

The story
Guillaume Atlan made this around 2000 in a tiny room, after his mom told him to go make his electronic music somewhere else. A friend had given him ten disco and rare groove records for his birthday. One of them was East Coast's The Rock. He sampled the intro, added drums and bass, then called his friend Mani Hoffman to sing. They wrote the words together and never planned a second song.
The video comes from brothers David and Laurent Nicolas (David is the animator known as Numéro 6), made at Passion Pictures. It follows a young man trying to make it in music. A chance meeting with a mouse brings him a short burst of success, then his manager fires him. Aliens who picked up his music broadcast come to collect him, but he's too big for their spaceship. So they take the mouse instead, off to a life of luxury, and leave the guy alone and broke. The brothers based the story on the duo's own immaturity, which is honest of everyone.
Released in March 2001, Starlight went to number two in France and the UK, topped the Australian and Irish dance charts and went platinum in the UK. Atlan says the odd little video helped turn it into a classic. The mouse did fine too.
