The story
Weval is two Dutch guys, Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers, who met studying film at the Utrecht School of the Arts and ended up making music instead. Someday comes off The Weight, their second album, released on the German label Kompakt in March 2019. Dreamy electronic music with live drums, Hammond organ and a rhythm that keeps tripping over itself on purpose – one critic heard a nod to Flying Lotus in it.
The video belongs to Irish artist Páraic Mc Gloughlin, who works out of Sligo and makes films by animating photographs. Thousands of them. He shot some and gathered the rest, then strung them together so fast that things start to rhyme by shape: roof domes, record players, tower-block elevators, all lined up by structure and pattern. At one point a figure standing in front of a column seems to tip backward right through the perspective. The idea is geometry hiding in everyday life, at every scale, and once you see it you can't stop seeing it.
Weval and Mc Gloughlin agreed on a loose plan, abstract and a little ambiguous, and he ran with it. Fair warning: it flashes hard, so skip it if strobing bothers you. Everyone else, don't blink.
